I loved most of the modern touch ups, though making Rosencrantz a woman was gratuitous 🙄
Indeed, what is it about Rosencrantz's role that makes it 'gratuitous'* for a woman? Is it impossible for Hamlet to have had a female friend? Or for a woman to collude with the king and queen?
You would no doubt be shocked to learn that it's not that uncommon for either Rosencrantz or Guildenstern to be cast as a woman—as for instance, in the recent Young Vic production. It's one of the easiest parts in the play to cross cast.
