...I've seen MJ twice. The first time I saw Frost; the second time, I saw his standby, Aramie Payton.

Frost is very impressive. I understand why he won the Tony. However, I actually preferred Payton. Frost's "impersonation" of Jackson is slightly truer to life, but Payton is the more assured vocalist with clearly superior technique and a better actor with the ability to craft an arc more dynamically--admittedly, some of which is because he doesn't imitate Jackson quite as closely.

On a related note, Taron Egerton’s performance as Elton John in the musical-biopic film “Rocketman” was astounding and felt very human precisely because he was given the license NOT to try to imitate Elton.

DanielVincent, thank you! I would like to see the Tony-winning performance but I'm glad to hear that Payton is worth seeing as well.

I know that both the Tonys and the Oscars recently seem to love actors who are portraying real-life people, but I personally find it a bit odd. I don't need to see a slavish imitation -- if I wanted that, I would watch old videos of the actual person.

I am growing increasingly tired of a seeming majority of major acting awards going to people who play real-life figures. Obviously, many of these performances have been deserving, but, as a trend, it's making me concerned that people confuse "slavish imitation" with actual acting.

I wouldn't be surprised if Frost's win over Jaquel Spivey becomes one of those award debates that goes on for years to come. (Bernadette and Marissa, I'm looking at you.)
