If I'd wanted to be hostile, I would have made fun of you for "It's really important to know the characters and plot before you go." Hamlet's not even in the running when it comes to most complex Shakespearean plots.

I think the play HAMLET doesn’t really take off until the nunnery scene. The thrills of he Ghosts’s appearance keep us engaged, as does Hamlet’s soliloquized pain, but the circumstances really whip into a frenzy w the nunnery scene.
