I guess it’s non-news now when someone is gay or lesbian.

FWIW she has been out for quite a while. She gave an interview to Teen Vogue in October 2019 about falling in love with a woman. And a quick search yields an interview with People in May 2019 about being in a relationship with a woman.

you have a choice as to how to read dramedy's post, as i have to how to read yours.

a snarky sarcastic tone or a genuinely curious one.

even though i often suspect that people on this board are often being snarky, i'm too tired these days to take offense, so i assume it's a just a matter of "gee, i didn't know that, isn't it interesting," instead of "wow, it's a BIG deal that i didn't know that."

remember, you can infer what you think, but you don't really know what someone is implying in text. the choice is yours. as is your choice of how to respond.

My question was genuine; any snark was unintentional. I don’t understand why it should be necessary for anyone to know the sexual orientation of any public figure or anyone in a professional setting unless said figure or professional announces it and feels, for whatever reason, the public has a right to know or needs to know this information about them. Obviously, by announcing her engagement, Beanie revealed her sexual orientation. Good for her. Prior to this, it wasn’t common knowledge, and there was no reason it should have been, in my opinion. That was my point.

I disagree that there is no reason for her sexual orientation to be common knowledge. The key to obtaining gay rights is everyone coming out. We need everyone to know who we are so that they know who they are discriminating against. It's also very important for gay children that we come out so they know they are not alone and not doomed to a terrible life. Remember "it gets better"? I think it is irresponsible for any gay person to not be fully out of the closet. This was Harvey Milk's opinion and I agree whole heartedly. We cannot afford for anyone to "protect their privacy."

I couldn't agree more (as usual)

I couldn't agree more. I think it's ominous that there are still people who support the hiding of minority sexuality (gay, bi, Alphabet City). Those who hide or live behind fictitious sexual identities may do it for their "comfort," for presumed professional security, and any number of reasons, all of which are based on the internalized gay-shaming of the homophobic. The American public is far, far ahead of Hollywood's denizens and are trapped in the gay-loathing of yesteryear.

I'm very happy to see that both Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch are completely out and open and public in a big way. Whether it's their intention or a by-product, their openness contributes to the demolition of gay-shaming in the industry, and in the country at large – as does the openness of any public figure.

(This is singularly important as of yesterday, when the legal, Constitutional right to anything but missionary-position heterosexual activity is now very much in question.)

No, I just can't agree with you at all. And I say this as a gay man who took the step of coming out in high school, something I don't regret at all for myself.

Yes, it's a wonderful and important thing for the community and our rights when someone feels comfortable enough to come out. But no, people should not be mandated to do so.

HUMANITY has to come first. We can encourage people to stand up for their identities, but first we must be humane and considerate of everyone's personal needs.

What you're saying seems just short of taking the step to outing others, which is a very destructive thing. People should come out only when they are ready. If that happens.

I understand and respect your point, KingSpeed, but sex and sexuality are private matters, and the decision to make them public is a very personal one. I wouldn’t criticize anyone for discretion although I agree that openness contributes to the common good.

I read advocate and out mags and others. And maybe she was profiled in one of those already but I forgot. Why is it important? Race Minorities find it extremely important for representation in any industry. Why would sexual orientation be any different? I’m not for outing someone that’s in the closet (kevin spacey for example hid it for decades), but clearly beanie is not.

I don't recall her ever saying in an interview that she was not heterosexual. I do remember Beanie and Ben Platt talking about their friendship and going to their high school prom together.

I suspect that she was never closeted. She just didn't go around shouting it to the world. At some point, perhaps after seeing Booksmart, I must have checked the Wikipedia article that said she identified as queer, a term I (personally) don't feel comfortable in using, given that it had such a disparaging connotation when I was growing up.

I agree that it's not important.

Theatrically speaking;

Paul Zindel got a cheap joke out of “two Lebanons” in his oft-produced (community theater) And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little.

Interestingly, not one mention of "Funny Girl" in the article, while some of her other credits are referenced.

I noticed that odd omission.

Streisand famously crossed off her remaining days in the show in the second half of her second year. This new Fanny may be doing the same thing, three months into her six month run.

Not that it's anyone's business, but we have no idea how she identifies. There are lots of identities.

In fairness to the original poster, the story does say that Beanie herself identified her partner as a woman at a SXSW panel. So it may not be "anyone's business" except she announced it at one of the world's most public events. I don't know if Beanie calls herself a "lesbian" but it does seems she identifies as a woman and said she is in a relationship with another woman...

I think it's great and we need not jump all over the original poster. It's always good for the community to be visible and continue to show that you can be openly queer/lesbian/LGBTQ+ and headline in a Broadway show. It wasn't that long ago that it was very rare so we shouldn't take it for granted.

For what it's worth, Wikipedia, for one, says that "Feldstein identifies as queer."

No, the picture does not make your statement "fairly accurate." All the picture and story state are she's engaged to the person she's engaged to. You're judging based on your own assumption and when corrected you doubled down on it in a way to erase a large swath of the spectrum.
