I would put O'Connell and Rashad's wins in a slightly different bucket than Beale and the other Lehman wins. The Lehman Trilogy was the only straight play this season that both had box office numbers and critical raves. It was the "snob hit" London import. It also played in London at least twice, in New York twice, and in Los Angeles this spring, so people saw it, just not in a Broadway theater. The other interesting thing is that most of its competitors had also closed. Beale had six fellow nominees, but three of them had also appeared in closed shows. His only competitors in open shows were David Threlfall and Sam Rockwell, neither of whom had a realistic chance, and David Morse, who I thought had a good chance, but How I Learned to Drive didn't win anything so the Tony voters were looking in a different direction. (It would have gotten my personal vote for Best Revival of a Play.)

But I think O'Connell's win in particular indicates that voters are following the rules, which not only means that closed shows have a chance, but it also may have an unintended effect of favoring a certain type of show. Dana H played 35 performances in October and November right when Broadway re-opened. The voters who saw it probably had certain characteristics relative to other Tony voters. That person probably lives in New York, likes serious/"experimental" stuff, and was probably relatively young since more older people were wary of going to the theater at that time than in the spring.

I wonder if more shows will do the streaming route that Clyde's did. I would have to think that seeing an official streaming version counts for Tony purposes, and it means that poorly-attended closed shows aren't at that same disadvantage. The Clyde's stream was extremely well-done, and I felt like it gave me a feel for what the show would have been like if I had been there in person.

(Interestingly, the only other Tony winners in play categories were The Skin of Our Teeth, which closed in May, and Take Me Out, which had its final performance at the matinee that Sunday. So one could not see a Tony-winning play the week after the Tonys, which is probably unprecedented except for last year's wacky ceremony. All six musical winners were still open after the Tonys.)

Plus the worldwide NT Live broadcast.
