| Yes! The show is in a very intimate space. Though I have to say that when I saw this two months ago, the ushers were less than vigilant about insisting in the mask mandate. | |

| ...does not help the argument. If that actor teaches in Equinox, their class is also not required to wear masks. I'll continue to wear a mask for the time being, and wish these rules hadn't been lifted so soon - but to focus on this when mask mandates have also been lifted everywhere else, INCLUDING other theaters around the country, seems a bit unnecessary. The tides were already headed in this direction. | |

| 1) No one is there to see your facial expressions, and everyone can hear you through your mask if you laugh, etc. 2) If you actually cared about the theatre, you would've been going and wearing a mask because the industry matters to you. 3) Get over it. |

| Although it's a short article, usually the NY Times is pretty good about providing both sides of an issue. But the only quotes seem to be from actors who wish masks would continue. Would no actor go on the record defending the dropping of the mask mandate? Or did the reporter have trouble finding any actor who is happy the mask mandate is over? | |

| If there are any actors who feel that way, they probably don’t want to be known for feeling that way. After the swift and appropriate judgements against those who have been, even tangentially, anti-mask (I’m looking at you Osnes and Kimball), who’d want to go on record? Every show has had to cancel performances or go with understudies since reopening. If we want to return to anything close to normalcy, it makes sense we do all we can to have that happen. Each actor and creative (behind the scenes, techs, musicians) all have seen colleagues get sick — and at least in one case, die. I just can’t see too many actors feeling relieved that the mandate has been lifted. Kimball still confounds me — he was hospitalized with COVID and still went on to gripe about having to sing with a mask on. That said, Ramin posted an “about time” message on his IG stories yesterday. So there’s at least one who feels that way. Good thing he’s pretty, because…. he also recently had COVID. It’s just stupid. This really should have united us. Instead, it was politicized and exploited for profit and division. The real pandemic is ignorance. Man, didn’t that sound judgey? | My understanding of the Kimball controversy is that he was ooposed to not being allowed to sing while wearing his mask. The governor of his state forbid more than one person in a congragation gathered to worship being allowed to sing. Kimball who said he wore a mask while singing objected. | |

| I’m by no means an anti-vaxer or an anti-masker. On the contrary, I was actually in (and still am in) a clinical trial of one of the vaccines before it was approved and I still mask up in many locations even when masks are not required. I’ll confess to not having read the article (yet) but I do wonder how much wearing masks in a theater protects cast members. I can see mask requirements for those in the first few rows of a theater, but I doubt very much that wearing a mask when you’re sitting 50 feet or more from the stage means a thing in terms of protecting the cast. | |

| Once again the League has ineptly created a labor relations donnybrook that will have long-term implications, for no reason. On the one hand, the mask mandate has become pretty silly. On the other, as has been rehearsed here many times, actors are uniquely incapable of independent choice in whether to wear a mask while working. In the grocery store, some cashiers wear masks and some don't. |

| If there’s any clue as to the effectiveness of audience masks protecting actors on stage, we can simply look at all the COVID cases among the casts and the cancelled performances from the last seven months. Clearly masks did little to stop actors from catching COVID, presumably because they get pick it up in all the places you mentioned. The Hugh Jackman headline would lead you to believe he got it from a maskless audience member. These actors will get comfortable with the new policy, just like all the other employees have at businesses from grocery stores to airplanes. |

That was a special case, since he's performing at Circle In The Square, where some audience members are indeed very close to the cast onstage. But it seems like that wouldn't be the case in normal proscenium houses, which make up most of Broadway. Are people really suggesting that Hugh Jackman could catch Covid from an audience member at the Winter Garden? He would be much more likely to catch it from going to a restaurant or grocery shopping, or to catch it from a fellow cast member that went to a bar, than from a guy in Row F. |

| Kimberly Prather would disagree with you. She has discussed how aerosols can travel much farther than 6 feet on Stars in the House and multiple interviews with Dr. LaPook on CBS. Prather suggests improving ventilation and using HEPA filters to clean the air. Have any theaters upgraded their ventilation systems? Are any theaters filtering air? Here's a short bio of Prather: Kimberly Prather is an American scientist who is an Atmospheric Chemist, Distinguished Chair in Atmospheric Chemistry, and a Distinguished Professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego. In April 2020, she was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences in honor of outstanding contributions to aerosol chemistry. | N95 and KN95 masks work well against all variants of covid. It's a good bet whoever gave this second round of covid to Mr. Jackman was not wearing one. i only hope he recovers fully. There's no guarantee that he will. | |

| It's an even better bet Mr. Jackman was not wearing a mask when he was exposed to covid a second time.There are no guarantees of anything including that he actually had covid the second time. All we can say with much assurance is that he had a boatload of antibodies in him at the time. | |

| The difference is, he can choose whether to go maskless to a restaurant or grocery store. He cannot choose to wear a mask while on stage. Setting aside the health and safety issues, it is an employment issue. While it is of course true that becoming infected from Row F is less likely than in a restaurant, that is not the standard and I suspect the League will be in litigation over this before the sun sets today. It's a workplace safety issue. It's stupid on the League's part to do this unilaterally, but what else is new. | |

| I had not realized that the protection of Hugh Jackman was such an important issue, but since it apparently is, we need to make sure that Hugh Jackman doesn't ever enter any situation where there are unmasked individuals, and more importantly, that the cast he appears with also give up any social interactions with the public. Whether the audience is unmasked makes no difference. By the way, since the health of the performers is so paramount, may I suggest that the performers onstage also wear masks? Sure, that might make watching the show less enjoyable, but as audience members can't we make this tiny sacrifice for the sake of the performers health? Or don't you all care? |

| I think the majority of rational and reasonable people have willingly worn masks, gotten tested regularly, and supported vaccine mandates during the heights of the pandemic to protect themselves and to protect others. But I also think that the same reasonable and rational people can certainly disagree on when and how to unwind those measures and mandates because there’s no black and white answer on when it is “safe” again or if in fact it ever will be. There seems to be a view on this board that if you think it’s time to end the mask mandate in theaters you are a selfish and terrible person that doesn’t care about broadway, the actors or the theater goers. That’s too bad. We are all on this board because we LOVE Broadway, and figuring out when and how to go back to “normal” has been really hard for everyone pretty much everywhere in the world. There are not always clear right and wrong answers and everyone is struggling with it. Why can’t we listen to others opinions without judging their human character? The League made a decision that they believe is best for their business. They have a right to do that. Broadway is one of the last to do away with masks - clearly they did not rush this decision. It’s too soon for some, it’s too late for others. Whatever you believe, you’re not a bad person. I support the league’s decision for many of the reasons cited here, but I feel compassionate for those who are nervous about being in a crowded theater. However I do think the original article posted from NY Times sort of embellishes the situation and is goes into virtue signaling territory. Likewise the “face cuff” comment was equally cringe-worthy, although it does seem the magic of being in live theater is partly the engagement and reaction of the audience. I do think that is altered a bit when everyone is wearing a mask but that’s just my opinion. I’m glad that masks allowed us to reopen broadway when we did, and now we are moving on. The west end no longer requires masks and they are fine. Broadway tours don’t require masks in all cities and they are fine. We will be fine on broadway too but it’s good the League will monitor. |
