| To give her the benefit of the doubt: she was apparently symptomatic with Covid, a respiratory infection after all. I’m no advocate*for her performance or casting but there’s no denying the challenge in returning to this vocally challenging role on the cusp of a debilitating disease. Calling out the second show of a Saturday sounds like acceptance of an inability to deliver tonight. *yes, I saw a Wednesday matinee in June |

| It's not a vocally challenging role if you can't sing any of the songs any better than a drunk sorority girl on karaoke night. | |

| Gee she only did three performances this week and she just came back from Covid. I don't think anyone cares that she is out, they all want to see Julie. | |

| ''I don't think anyone cares that [Feldstein] is out, they all want to see Julie.'' Frankly, I don't think most of ''Funny Girl's'' audiences know who Julie Benko is, and I'm not even convinced they all know Beanie Feldstein. Since the beginning of April, its weekly grosses have been between $1.1 million and $1.3 million, regardless of who's playing Fanny Brice. Among them, there's a demand to see ''Funny Girl,'' despite its lackluster reviews and lack of Tony nominations (only 1 for Jared Grimes). By contrast, the acclaimed ''Company'' has reached $1 million in grosses only once, on a holiday week, since it reopened last November. The week before the Tonys, it grossed $640,297. Last week, $727,178. ... And hence, the sad news of its forthcoming closing on July 31. |

| My experience has been the same as yours regarding Funny Girl. Audiences want to see the show itself, rather than the actresses who are playing Fanny Brice. I've heard consistently good comments (although not necessarily raves) for both Beanie and Julie from the people I speak to in rush lines and at the theatre. There is a small group of individuals on both ATC and BWW who have been posting negative comments about Beanie every single day for months. They say the same thing over and over again. They feel that she was miscast, and they want her out of the show. Of course, they have every right to express their feelings on message boards. It just seems unnecessarily cruel to continue the constant barrage repeatedly after they have made their point. |

| How is it cruel? I mean, as long as Beanie isn’t reading it which is her choice. | |

| It's hard to know if you are being serious or not. She knows because people around her have told her. That much I know for sure. | |

| If I read terrible stuff about my friend online, I would not tell them. Do you know Beanie personally? Is that why you’re saying people told her? Because you know for a fact? If so, it’s the friends who are cruel. I got a really bad review once and didn’t find out about it til months later. No one told me. By the way, I’m aware Beanie is a human being. Part of being a public figure is people saying horrible stuff about you. It means you’ve made it. | |

| I wouldn’t be surprised if Beanie I has reached the limit of her dealing with the barrage of criticism she has endured. She got to live her dream of playing Fanny Brice but now the dream has turned into a nightmare and it is time for her to move on to new endeavors and a marriage. She will survive. | |

It’s unlikely that a professional would abandon a show without negotiation. And the audiences continue to cheer her. This isn’t a tragedy. |

| This topic has no right answer. In the same thread I gave Feldstein the benefit of the doubt, returning from 10 days of symptomatic Covid, and in another post, mentioned that she's under contract and therefore wouldn't call out capriciously. Neither response sits well with some. The post above that opines how the show is the star and that both actresses have a negligible effect on box office is spot on. And backed up by any perfunctory read of weekly grosses. We can haggle about which Fanny is better, how oddly the show was cast, whether critical discussions cross the line to cruel, or whether factor X is driving buzz. But a fair number of people who don't care about theater boards or reviews seem to want to see this piece on Broadway; they buy tickets, and for now, that's the story. If box office plunges after 9/25, it may have to do with a finite audience for the revival; who knows? But it's enjoying a fine summer in this still shaky season, star or standby center stage. |
