(women refusing men sex) Lysistrata - the 1972 musical version with Melina Mercouri and a score by Peter Link

Seems the time for a fresh take on this story. Anyone see the 1972 production that was helmed by theater and film director Michael Cacoyanis (Zorba, the Greek)?

Also in the cast were Jane Connell, Priscilla Lopez, Patti Karr, Mary Jo Catlett, Avril Gentles, and Madeleine le Roux. Emory Bass played Omicron.

There's also this version starring Cherry Jones...

... one of the worst things I've ever seen on a stage.

"Lysistrata" also featured the one Broadway appearance of exotic dancer Nai Bonet of French-Vietnamese extraction. She later on starred in the camp classic "Nocturna" starring John Carradine as Dracula, Yvonne de Carlo as Jugulia Vein and the handsome and tragically short-lived Antony Hamilton. Basically, the granddaughter of Dracula goes to NYC and discovers disco and true love. Wonderful things happen.

"Lysistrata" has had an interesting series of revivals. A flop operetta version in 1925 starring Olga Baclanova with music by Reinhold Gliere. A successful 1930 revival with Violet Kemble-Cooper, Hope Emerson and Nydia Westman that ran for over 200 performances. An all-black revival in 1946 with music and dancing starring Etta Moten, Fredi Washington, Rex Ingram with a young Sidney Poitier in a small role of Probulos. Then a 1959 revival starring Nan Martin as Lysistrata and Donald Madden.

I'm being silly here, but there's always the short run Lysistrata Jones from 2011! Ridiculous, but incredibly fun.

One of those shows that probably didn't deserve a Broadway mounting. However, was fun to see in Broadway proportions since it will likely never receive that kind of production again.

And don’t forget “The Happiest Girl in the World” the 1961 musical with a score by Offenbach and lyrics by Yip Harburg starring Cyril Ritchie’s at the Martin Beck.

That was Cyril Ritchard.
Barbara Vann (the late great actress/director, of the Open Theatre and Medicine Show Ensemble) directed a revival of it back around 2005 at Medicine Show. It has scope and wit and swell tunes, and Barbara made a juicy production of it.

That’s what I get for not proofreading. I knew it was Ritchard. I saw it.

It sounded good on paper. Very disappointing.
