I agree. Parsons is 49, but reads younger. In the 1994 movie, Albert Finney, who played Alfie, was 58. In the 2002 musical, Roger Rees was 78 (!).

It's about a man whose life has largely passed him by and wants to stage an Oscar Wilde play in 1963 Dublin. It's more poignant if he's older.

Parsons can sing. He once performed ''The Elements,'' Tom Lehrer's setting of the Periodic Table to Gilbert & Sullivan, on ''The Big Bang Theory.''

Still, Alfie's role isn't that vocally demanding. Rees did it. But it's got one of my very favorite Flaherty & Ahrens songs: ''Love Who You Love.''
