The old way broke as soon as kids started camping overnight for Rent Tickets, and the in-person lotteries were born. They broke when 46th Street became jam-packed with people during Hamilton's in-person lotteries (admittedly this was partially due to the accompanying Ham4Ham shows, but the crowds were already pretty huge when I was in NYC in 2013 for the in-person lottery at Book of Mormon (2 years and a half years into its run). I understand it's objectionable, but hot tickets tend to set new rules.
