I think Defying Gravity can totally be followed by something other than intermission, or end of movie 1. Now, perhaps it's true that it wouldn't work to simply move RIGHT along to the opening of Act two as it stands in the stage version, but geez have a litlte imagination. They could do something unique that film brings because film tells stories using pictures. How about some visual storytelling--underscored of course--that gives the audience some information about what happens after Defying Gravity? She flies away through the sky. Goes where? Finds her castle? Cut to Glinda and something that happens to her. I think the space between act one and act two could totally be bridged this way in a movie.

The closest comparison I can think of is Evita, although the details are a little hazy since I haven't watched it in awhile. A New Argentina is a massive rousing act closer, AND when act two opens time has passed, they have been married, he's been elected president. The movie uses visual storytelling to bridge the gap. You see them getting married (which you don't see in the stage version) and then big crowd scenes where the people are moving towards the Casa Rosada for the speeches.
