The play essentially hinges on a town board's debate to communicate an honest history of slaughtering/stealing from Native Americans - versus - a false propagation of a tall-tale about American bravery and exceptionalism. The central protagonist initially storms out to tell the world about the true horrors of the town's founders, but is ultimately convinced that the lie benefits his family and their future. The board meeting ends with a cult-like dance ritual, chanting, and blood smearing on their faces.
(I very much enjoyed this play!) |
