Interesting what you say about how Sam Simahk is playing Freddy. It sounds similar to my impression of how Jordan Donica played Freddy on Broadway, which didn't work for me either, but I know it worked for many.

The Broadway ending was similar, except Eliza's leaving was even more definitive, with her stepping off the stage and walking up the aisle through the audience and out the back door of the auditorium. Higgins's reaction, after the initial surprise, was a bit of amusement, a bit of almost pride that she had the gumption to do that, and a bit of acceptance; I think there was some wry laughter to himself. He definitely wasn't crying.

One major difference in the way the Broadway production cast chemistry was compared to the usual, at least with Lauren Ambrose in the revival's original cast, is that Eliza had absolutely zero romantic interest in Higgins throughout the show. So it did not seem likely at all that she would do a 180 in the final scene and stick around. But she finds her own worth, so to speak, over the course of the show, which does not involve her being with Higgins. I think Higgins develops feelings for Eliza, though, particularly in I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face. But he realizes in those final moments that it's not right for her, so he wishes her luck and watches her go, and maybe now that he's opened himself up to possibilities, he'll find love with a future someone. So both have moved to a better place over the course of the show, just not in tandem with each other. The ending worked for me.
