said Ethel Merman long ago as related by Elaine Stritch, as Stritch would knock on Ethel's dressing room door before each performance, as required back then, as her standby in "Call Me Madam" before rushing off to do her big song in New Haven in "Pal Joey" ("Zip"). Not a direct answer to your question, but it's what comes to mind! :) |
