The new score was pretty uneven. "Paris Makes Me Horny" has to be one of the worst songs ever written for the theatre. Also, I feel asking Andrews to deliver nightly the songs that she could "freeze" in the film was not all that successful. (The very audible register break in the iconic slide up at the end of "Le Jazz Hot," for instance.) And even her new stuff ("Living In The Shadows" etc) wasn't all that well-crafted.
I remember the NYT review wryly saying that Edwards was a great film director. Perhaps it really should have been someone else's project. But in terms of the writing, I feel that for all the hard-working actors up there, they really didn't have a lot to work with.
But - I give Andrews a lot of credit. Especially in feeling like she had to turn down what most probably would have been a Tony win. |
