Thanks for your words, This is what I meant but didn't articulate: "If you mean that a self-assured glamorous beautiful woman with a more mainstream-accepted appearance of facial and bodily beauty fits less with the character and how it's written than Beanie (or even Barbra) does... I agree."
You also make me realize that this being a different time, plus my own personal tastes---I don't think of ethnically Jewish looks as not pretty. So if that's what is supposed to make Michele (and maybe made Barbra) fit the bill of a grl who isn't pretty, then I don't personally get that from Lea. And other than that, she doesn't seem anything at all like an underdog.
To pivot a bit, the more I've thought about it, I think the thing that I question even more than looks is just...the show is so mediocre as a piece of writing, and this production isn't that great on top of it. I kept thinking....is Lea going to shine with this material and this production? Will her voice be enough to overcome the baked in unsatisfying experience of what this show is? |
