Howard Keel did Show Boat and Kismet in stock after the movies. Gordon MacRae did Oklahoma! in stock after the movie. (He did Carousel in stock before the movie.) Katherine Grayson did Show Boat in stock after the movie.
I think there may be examples from plays but nothing is coming to mind at the moment.
Btw, I would think that Topol, Brynner, Moody, Harrison and others who did the roles onstage before they did the movies are not examples of what you are looking for (and in all but one of those cases were the first to play the roles onstage), nor would Harry Secombe in Pickwick be as he not only was the first to play the role in the stage musical, there was no film version, although there was a television production in which he starred. Also, Giorgio Tozzi played Emile onstage in Los Angeles and San Francisco (opposite Mary Martin) before he dubbed Rossano Brazzi in the movie.
Topol, btw, played Tevye onstage in Israel before he played it in London, although he was not the first to play the role onstage in Israel. |
