Victor/Victoria had a respectable run on Broadway of 734 perfs and 25 previews, but it did not recoup -- it was a commercial failure. I thought it was a flawed show with a weak score, but it was entertaining, primarily because of Andrews. Rachel York should have been nominated for Featured Musical Actress. Tony Roberts was also very good. The sets and costumes were fine as was the choreography.
The conventional wisdom at the time was that despite their weaknesses Victor/Victoria, Big and/or State Fair would be nominated for Best Musical along with the season's big hits, Rent and Noise/Funk. I vaguely recall some rumor of collusion among the nominating committee to snub Victoria, Big, and Fair. |
