Responding about the comparison between Dolly’s: Channing and Streisand. Streisand worked hard in that film amd played her scenes well (and sang beautifully, of course), but her femininity and sensuality are at odds with the role of a woman who needs to get some life back into my life.
That said, I confess I only saw Channing once, in a forgettable B’way farce called FOUR ON A GARDEN, but she was magic. Not only a brilliant physical comedian, she had an intimate relationship with her audience that I had never seen before or since. Comparisons are odorous (except for Tony Bennett in concert, in his prime). Channing took us all directly to her heart; fourth wall be darned. The plot of the show was still there, but it was more there to be an occasion for Channing’s romance with her audience. A Genius. But I don’t think that kind of audience rapport can be captured in film. (I saw Bea Lillie in HIGH SPIRITS; she had a similar out-of-time relationship with the crowd.) |
