"It turned out that there WAS collusion between nominating committee members to make sure that both VICTOR VICTORIA and BIG were not nominated for Best Musical, etc. As a result, the Tony nominating process was altered."
for more information see the appendix (pages 207-212) of the book "Making It Big" (about the creation of the musical Big) which contains an unmailed letter from Richard Maltby Jr to the League/American Theatre Wing about how 3 of the only 14 members of the nominating committee may/probable manipulated the voting process to exclude Big (and most likely also Victor, Victoria). As the above post states, the process was changed in the future. |
