Victor Victoria certainly should have received a best musical nomination, though Rent was the clear winner. In addition to the performers mentioned in this thread, I’d suggest Mancini should have received a nomination too — a workmanlike score, and obviously no Rent, but for the most part it served the show’s book and its stars. I was also charmed by Big that season. Again, by no means a great show, but under appreciated. I saw Bring in the Noise, and was pretty thrilled by it, but it seemed more like a “special event” than a book musical like Rent, V/V or Big. Didn’t see Swinging a Star but I did see Chronicles of a Death Foretold, and, except for the staging, was unimpressed. Bottom line: In the justifiable excitement over Rent, both Victor Victoria and Big got shafted.
