| I'm with you. Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse's ''Victor/Victoria'' score, which included some new songs, should've gotten the fourth slot, after ''Rent,'' ''Bring in da' Funk'' and ''Big.'' Sadly, Mancini died before he could complete that score, so Frank Wildhorn was brought in to write a few tunes, including ''Living in the Shadows,'' a haunting ballad sung by Julie. Instead, the Tony nominators gave the fourth Best Original Score slot to ''State Fair.'' And not the entire score, but only the 4 interpolated Rodgers & Hammerstein songs, which included 3 cutout tunes from ''Oklahoma!'' and ''Pipe Dream.'' And which weren't written for ''State Fair.'' At least, the new tunes in ''Victor/Victoria'' were written for that production. By the way, David Merrick was ticked off at the Tony nominations that year and threatened to sue because the Tony nominators ruled that only the 4 trunk songs were Tony-eligible. That meant that the hit songs from the 1945 movie, like ''It's a Grand Night for Singing'' and the Oscar-winning ''It Might as Well Be Spring,'' were not. I believe Merrick might've pointed out the example of ''Beauty and the Beast'' (1994), whose entire score was Tony-eligible, which included the hit movie songs by Howard Ashman-Alan Menken, plus the new tunes written for Broadway, with lyrics by Rice. Ever the showman, Merrick took out an ad that proclaimed: ''When the Big Victor is announced, it won't be Fair.'' Evidently, he was slyly alluding to the fact that the Tony nominators snubbed ''Big,'' ''State Fair'' and ''Victor/Victoria'' for Best Musical. Merrick complained to the Tonys: ''Partial scores obviously cannot compete with entire scores. This is not fair.'' Anyway, ''Rent'' won Score as hugely expected, and Merrick's protests fell on deaf ears. |
