I think I am slow on the uptake here, but I think I'm finally parsing Genealley's sentence as I think he intended, which is not a straightforward
"Why does Shakespeare use so many words that no one can understand?"
Which seemed like one of the weirdest sentences ever written on a theater message board, but rather
an extremely sarcastic "Why does Shakespeare write in a way that the director has no clue what the play is supposed to be about? Why is he such a poor writer that the director doesn't understand fundamental aspects of the play?"
I haven't seen this production, but I agree with lordofspeech that if the director is ignoring what seems like a fundamental element of the play (that Richard III has a physical issue that others notice), it needs to be clear why the director is doing this. And it sounds like this is not clear at all. |
