Gypsy and Funny Girl

Jule Styne's scores for both shows are terrific. Gypsy wins out if only because his collaborators gave him so much more to work with. Gypsy's book, music and lyrics are all A+++ to the nth power. Gypsy is one of the greatest plays in the history of the world. And Rose, unlike Lear, does not suffer from dementia. Funny Girl's lyrics are B/B+ and Bob Merrill's best. The book. The book is at best a C---; really a D or had it been an E (a grade in other places allowing a student to rewrite the final), that option was taken by Harvey and it is still a D. Why did Funny Girl Run when we all know the book is the very foundation of a successful musical. Answer - most of the songs. The songs require a large range, a massive belt, charisma and charm from the performer as the show provides neither charm nor charisma for the character. Streisand made it work, so did Mimi Hines. Rose can be played any number of ways; it is a great play with depth. For me, Lansbury was the best, but that is not universal nor should it be. Beanie is charming and has a sweet voice and acting chops. Not what one needs for Funny Girl. I am not sure Funny Girl is worth it for anyone. I've read the threads below. Some are cruel, some are not. To have cast Beanie was cruel. To have revived Funny Girl was stupid. Sing the songs in a concert.
