I've seen all of these except Oresteia (which hasn't opened yet).
I really think it comes down to - do you want something more light and fun (Fat Ham, POTUS, Twelfth Night, or something darker/more serious (and longer - both productions at the Armory are around 4 hours long).
Twelfth Night - this was a lovely experience. Was it the best acted production of a Shakespeare play ever? No. But as far as overall experience goes, it's delightful, especially in comparison to Richard III, with the vax checks, bag checks, and ushers yelling at you if you forgot to bring your program when you stepped out to go to the bathroom. Here, you just walk in and sit down, and it's all very fun and easy-going. Plus, it's free.
And whereas I suspect a regional production of Fat Ham will be fairly decent, I'm not sure the same can be said for POTUS, which is a ridiculous play that succeeds as well as it does due to its cast.
And the Park Avenue Armory is a wonderful venue. It's definitely worth seeing something there, and this Hamlet is quite good.
Ultimately, you could just let the seat gods be your guide - which show has the best available seat the night you have free. (Which, now that I say that - since the two Park Ave Armory shows are playing in rep, they can't both be available during a single slot, so that will likely eliminate one of those). |
