I always thought the stage manager did the prepping for non-star replacements. Is the Associate Director position a long-standing one or relatively new as the person responsible for this? I notice that, at least according to ibdb, long-running shows like Wicked and Phantom did not have Associate or Resident Directors when they opened, but they do now.
