Let's unpack this, shall we? An all-female production of a show may have trans women in it, but it isn't inherently a trans work of art. Nor was Richard played as a trans character, so being opposed to a female Richard again has nothing to do with transphobia. And there is nothing ridiculous about a bunch of women singing about watching other women and being attracted to them, because there are women who are attracted to other women.
So a person who is opposed to those things wouldn't be transphobic, but they would definitely be small-minded, reactionary, and aligned with the patriarchy and its desire to deprive women of visibility and opportunity in our culture.
The nice thing about complaints like this is that they simply prove that our theatre culture has changed. These productions are being created, audiences are going to see them, and people who don't like it can only post bitter, increasingly meaningless rants about it online. |
