First, THEY may not have cut anything. It could have been Sondheim's choice alone. I don't know if all of this is documented anywhere.
I tend to think it might have been a bit of overkill, to have the "sensitive, clever" section in THREE songs (there's the short quote in "It Takes Two" as well.) There we also a number of other major cuts/changes all through the process of writing the show. Clearly the last ones to go were this one, the "Now you know what's out there in the world" section of the Lament (since restored) and the bridge section of "Any Moment" - all recorded on the OBC but out of the show by the time it opened on Broadway. But there were many other cuts too. |
