| I’d respectfully argue that Jeanette’s number is both plot specific - it’s a blunt assessment of where the group’s rehearsal process has landed (“Things could be better. Could they get any worse? I don’t think so.” She deadpans.) And a rich counterpoint to the bumbling amateurs via the character’s professional backstory. In that regard it’s more like Carol Hall’s poignant “Doatsy Mae,” a yearning rumination by a woman whose physical allure is ignored in a show about sex workers. I have a fondness for such numbers. |
