I respectfully disagree. Burnett could have sung that score. She is so revered as a comedienne that her singing is sometimes unjustly overlooked, but she has always been an excellent singer with a strong, distinctive belt. I remember some of the great duets she did with guest stars on her variety show--she could hold her own with anybody--as well as the "mini musicals."
This clip, which appears to be from about the same time as the original FUNNY GIRL, gives some idea of what she could have brought to the role. |
