I thought the same about including Lansbury in the same classification as Verdon and Channing. I don't think either of the last two could have done justice to the scores of GYPSY or SWEENEY TODD. Yet I recall Lansbury being asked why she never released a solo album (as the other two had. Verdon one. Channing too many). And she simply stated that hers was a voice best suited for the theatre. Period.
One of my all-time favorite Lansbury performances is the one below from a TV guest appearance. It's Dame Lansbury in her prime gloriously belting out "I Don't Want To Know." And she performs the entire song seated. |
