As someone who grew up on the movie of PAL JOEY and loved it, I never questioned that Rita Hayworth sang the song (although she didn't really). It seemed to suit Vera. I was a sucker for the movie because of Frank and Kim. I never knew until later that ZIP was for another character. I actually think the movie works better than the show on stage. Maybe it's Kim, Frank and Rita that made it work for me and I maybe because I was just kid longing to get out of nowhere to somewhere and that movie transported me. Vera singing ZIP was a revelation to me. I had dinner with Miss Hayworth once at Elaine's and simply gushed at being in her presence and I could think of nothing but ZIP.
