| It IS fun, and in the moment, even infectious. Memorable or possessing some unique musical stamp? Not so much. But more importantly, in musical theatre terms, does it have any inherent conflict, storytelling attributes, or even define a specific character? Nope. Then as a lyric, does it have any progression? Does it go from point A to point B? Or if it's simply going to be a list song, does it at least up the ante, the metaphors getting more wild or comic or "out there" as it goes along? No, no, no. I'll grant it does exactly what it's intended to do as a promo -- generates excitement and great will. But if I'm sitting in a theatre, I'm betting this song is a "stage wait" -- a terrifically energetic piece that I have to sit through in order to get to the next bit of action or story or character, because this song doesn't have any of that. |
