I'm as surprised as anyone on here about Liza's absence, but every year I expect Mark Morris.
What modern dance choreographer besides him hasn't received it?
He's 65.
George Balanchine received it in 1978 at 74
Martha Graham in '79 at 85
Agnes de Mille in '80 at 75
Jerome Robbins in '81 at 63
Katherine Dunham in '83 at 74
Merce Cunningham in '85 at 66
Antony Tudor in '86 at 78
Alwin Nikolais in '87 at 77
Alvin Ailey in "88 at 57
Paul Taylor in '92 at 62
Arthur Mitchell in '93 at 59
Jacques d'Amboise in '95 at 61
Mikhail Baryshnikov '00 at 52
Twyla Tharp '08 at 67
Bill T. Jones '10 at 58
It's been quite a long time since a choreographer has been honored (I didn't count Debbie Allen as a choreographer, since that's one of her many roles) |
