BRING ON A DRAG DREAMGIRLS!

Already hinted at in Craig Lucas' Longtime Companion, and (as much as I loved that film), no thank you. :-)

If they could do it without it becoming campy, I'd welcome the attempt. But (and I'm speaking as a gay man) that may be a much harder task. The thing about this 1776 is that the women don't ever really call meta-theatrical attention to the casting, they just do the show, as seriously as it would be in a traditional production. It's never "drag" in the campy sense. They're never trying to "impersonate" men, they're just playing the text and the relationships in a very honest, straightforward way. I would wonder if the temptation to "camp up" the Dreams would be much harder to resist. I don't know, but my instinct says it would be tough. I'll be the first to say I'd love to be proven wrong. But in the meantime, if we're looking for shows to do in cross-gender ways, that would hardly be the first property that would come to mind. (And as I already said, neither is The Most Happy Fella.)
