| Very good point and thank you. Yes, the drag thing could easily get carried away, but after watching RuPaul's Vegas drag show I was impressed by how sincere much of the show was. Has anyone ever done a fully lip-synced musical? What would the rights be to that? But again, camp would likely overtake & distract. I've always felt Mack the Knife (Macheath) would be a prime role for gender-bent casting. So much work that displays misogyny/infidelity in a blurred line between characterization & commentary begs for the director to demonstrate an awareness of how problematic it is, and giving a woman the opportunity to portray the character may be an on-the-nose way to do it, but that feels appropriate for a Brecht work. |
