| I haven't seen the movie in ages. My memory is that they get conscripted at the last minute, but sounds like I might have that wrong. It's a good thing to think about, because I don't have the same concerns going into this one as I did those other two. I wonder if maybe "Some Like It Hot" will be easier to swallow because, at least in the film, the two guys are more hapless clowns, rather than the entitled ne'er-do-wells of the leads in "Tootsie" and "Mrs. Doubtfire", as written in the musicals. I find Rob McClure incredibly likable, yet I couldn't stomach the things he was doing to his poor ex-wife and kids, which made it impossible for me to enjoy the shenanigans. I agree with you that the audience is in the theater to have a good time, but for many, that good time won't be had if they premise of the show is uncomfortable or gross. Often times, arguments like "turn off your brain and just have a good time" come from people with a certain privilege who aren't directly affected by the situations presented on stage - that's been my experience most of the time I make that argument myself. |
