Gregory Hines was such a force of nature in that part that I'm not sure tha anyone could come close to comparison. (Kind of like doing Funny Girl without Streisand or Mimi HInes.)
The lead part had nothing to do with dance, but the show was dance-centric.
Gregory Hines in Jelly's Last Jam ranks for me as one of the top five stage performances I've ever seen. Others: Reba McIntire in Annie Get Your Gun. Angela Lansbury in Gypsy. Hugh Jackman in Boy From Oz (now, tragically erased by Music Man). John McMartin in Great God Brown. |
