“Incredible tapper, but he's probably a better fit for Young Jelly.”
Can’t tell if you’re serious, but ridiculous if so.
Savior Glover in the original production was 18 when he played Young Jelly.
Jared Grimes turns 40 this year… so not only more than twice as old as Glover was, but also already 5 years older than Brian Stokes Mitchell was when he replaced Gregory Hines as (adult) Jelly in that first production.
(Hines himself when the show opened was only 5 or 6 years older than Grimes is, which puts Grimes squarely in the middle, equidistant in age between the two primary original leads of the Broadway premiere.)
Even if there were another or better actor to play Jelly, and even if Grimes weren’t arguably overqualified at this stage to play such a smallish part, I’m just not sure how in his 40s he plays a role that ends with the character still in his mid-teens. |
