He seems like a nice guy and he does some inventive things. But he lacks the pain and fury that Gregory Hines expressed in his dance.
Of course, the weird thing about Jelly's Last Jam is that Jelly Roll Morton was not a dancer, yet the show is dance-centric.
I didn't see Brian Stokes Mitchell, but I don't think of him as a stellar dancer.
All of that is why Gregory Hines in the part was such a rare experience to behold. I saw it three times. I'm sorry to report that it was inconsistent, but at its best it was fantastic. Only those who saw it at its best could judge any comparison. But that's the way of live performance. It lives on only through memory. And when the memory fades you get stuff like, well, this current production of Music Man. Youngsters think that this is what Music Man should be. Or some attempt of recreation of Jelly's Last Jam without Gregory Hines (at his best). |
