You need to watch the movie again. Joe and Jerry actually meet with Poliakoff in his office and apply for the opening. When they are told that the Florida gig is for girl musicians, Jerry (Jack Lemmon) tells Sid P. that they would be willing to masquerade as women to get the job. Sid then tells them about a dance in Urbana, which they accept instead.

After witnessing the St. Valentine's Day massacre, Joe (speaking as Geraldine) calls Sid back and takes the Florida gig. They meet with Sweet Sue at the train and give her phony references (the Sheboygan Girls Conservatory). Their initial plan is to take the free train ride to Florida and then ditch Sue's band. However, when they see Sugar wiggling her ass while walking toward the train, they get other ideas.

Joe and Jerry make Michael Dorsey and Dan Hilliard look like choir boys. They are small-time con artists. They lie and cheat, pass bum checks, sleep with women in order to borrow money and use their cars. It's implied in the film that they must have stolen the women's clothing they wear from one of their girlfriends from the speakeasy band. They certainly didn't purchase the clothes since they are completely broke after losing all their money at the dog races.
