Pinkins was divine and wholly deserved her Tony nomination that year - she elevated a mostly fun if slight evening into something much richer and compelling.

The show had its moments, but it ultimately didn't find a strong reason to exist. The cast was excellent, though Andre De Shield's presence slightly titled the production in his favor, in a way that didn't serve the larger story. The design was fun, the Ellington songs were snappy, but that was a crowded summer and "Play On!" just wasn't quite exciting enough to last.
