I understand about Hines. He was brilliant. Easily, a favorite performance.
That said, I’m not at ALL sure of where you get your post’s title. Grimes is tremendously talented and we’ve only begun to really see what he can do. I suspect you’ve only seen Funny Girl (if that). And, if you’ll excuse me, Funny Girl is no Jelly’s Last Jam.
But, perhaps your insistence that he’s no Gregory Hines might serve him (and this fantasy production) quite well.
Anyhow, I’m for giving the man a chance. I mean, did anyone expect Hines’ performance? I didn’t. I, too, went back a number of times. He was dazzling and always surprising. |
