| There's a moment at the top of the show that maybe encourages the over the top reaction. The cast takes their places in the light and hold for applause. There is a lot. The hold is significant. THEN after a lot of hooting and clapping, the conductor raised his hands and a light go on David Patrick Kelly. Taking this moment sets the tone for the rest of the performance. I saw a Wednesday matinee last week. I was sitting orchestra center. I'd say the response around me was enthusiastic, but not very vocal after each number. At the curtain call, there was much more screaming and it was mostly coming from the balcony. There was a young woman in one of the boxes leaning over and screaming. Her companions were filming her and egging her on. It seems like the hooting and yelling is more performative than honest. I did love the performance, but it just hurts my ears and pulls me out of the performance when the audience around me is also performing. |
