| I'm a bit of a buzzkill when it comes to Judymania, although it's certainly an interesting relationship between performer and audience and God knows if anyone deserved supportive adulation, it was poor Judy. In a concert setting it's one thing but in a play or a musical play- especially if it's an intelligently-composed piece like most Sondheim- then those explosions are huge distractions. I didn't mind it in a piece of mindless dross like Sunset Blvd when Elaine Paige got a standing ovation (in London!) after each of her big numbers. But Into the Woods has so many after-song moments that are subtle and lowkey and I can't imagine I would like to hearing yelling and shrieking (and even worse, singing along) punctuating the numbers. |
