You are quite correct that the above the title cast is full of theater idols and Bareilles is an extremely talented and versatile star who is on the verge of becoming the kind of idol which I meant but so failed to explain. I meant someone like Beyonce or Harry Styles. I found the applause in Into the Woods (and I saw it at City Center not yet on Broadway) to be entusiastic, boisterous yet entirely appropriate. Songs were not interruptednor did the audience shout over the dialogue. It just seemed to me there was an audience, younger than at most Encore productions I have seen in the past who were thoroughly enoying the work they were seeing and becoming immersed emotionally in it. I actually had someone similar experiences this season at "Company" and "Slave Play" and if it was slightly lower in decibels , the audiences in question skewed slighly older. Indeed the audience at "Slave Play" did interrupt the play a couple times with hoots and laughter and I think applause but it did not seem totally inappropriate nor interfere with my enjoyment and engagement of that play.
