It's a fair point. The amped up concert feeling of the present ITW production makes its impact on the material. I thought the show suffered for it in its second act. But that was less the audience's doing than what I saw as a missing idea(s) for the second act by the director. I think it's a excellent production nonetheless because of its many merits including deBessonet's direction.
Judy is an interesting example because by the time those crowds started screaming at her concerts she had become something more than an entertainer and the screaming carried with it a political charge. The Stonewall Riots were partially set off by Garland's death. The screaming and adulation become less and less about the music, the show and finally the specific entertainer, sports team or politician and it becomes about the crowd itself. |
