(Re)Naming Broadway Theatres
Posted by: Musicals54 05:22 pm EDT 07/24/22

The chaos of naming Broadway theatres needs (if only in my dreams) a re-do. Beginning at the very beginning, we have two most desirable musical houses the St. James and the Majestic - anglo-pretentious and meaningless. St James becomes the Rodgers; the Majestic the Hammerstein and suspended by supports at the tops of both theatres high over the middle of 44th St., a huge "&" Why is the current home of Hamilton named for Rodgers. He had only one show, a flop, there, Do I Hear A Waltz? R & H had Oklahoma!, Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet (a flop that payed back) and the Flower Drum Song at one of the two 44th St. theatres. The former 46th St. Theatre then should be renamed Fosse/Verdon: Damn Yankees, New Girl in Town, Redhead, Chicago. Brooks Atkinson is a role-model of criticism as important now as is in his time (Kerr not so much). If the Nederlanders won't give up that named house, then they should do the right thing by renaming the totally unearned Neil Simon the Lena Horne. The Winter Garden given West Side Story, Follies, Pacific Overtures should become the Hal Prince (as currently named it even lacks a winter garden). Schoenfeld and Jacobs did save the Shuberts but as a team so pick one of the two on 45th St as the Schoenfeld-Jacobs. The Imperial up for grabs Loesser, Merman, Cole Porter. The Marquis could be the Porter as the Uris is now the Gershwin and, as such, then the Minskoff becomes the Kern. naming rights, NO. American Airlines becomes ? Friedman (a press agent who died in 1974) becomes ?. No one pronounces Lyceum correctly so it needs a change. Longest run is play by Garson Kanin. Not worthy, in my opinion. Add in the Belasco (he was a playwright as well as producer, but is Madame Butterfly still playable? Girl of the Golden West? If remembered it is courtesy of Puccini and M. Butterfly. The Palace and Studio 54 are storied names so they are safe. But the Ambassador? Longest run is you know whose show... Time to face the truth and New Amsterdam becomes the Disney or the Ashman/Menken. Have at it anyone or everyone...
