| I never saw the show, but bought the CD when it came out, and I had much the same response as you. Great performances (I went to college with Mullaly) by all, but the score did not persuade me that it gained anything by being turned into a musical. In a sense, the style of the original film not only lampooned the Universal monster pics, but felt like an operetta/burlesque with a coule of songs thrown in. The pair doing the Irving Berlin, Leachman on the violin--the evocative background score. It already felt a bit like a musical. |
