I saw the show on Saturday evening and had the same experience with the audience response. It's fascinating because at this point it seems to be the case for every performance of this show. Not just one particular audience--like a preview stuffed with friends and family or something. And on top of that, I do not see this response at every other show, so I don't buy the whole "this is just how modern audiences are now" line.
I think the production is deligthful so in this case it is truly enthusiastic appreciation, not people trying to draw attention to themselves. That said, as much as I loved it, I did find myself thinking once or twice: this response seems a little over the top compared to what is happening on stage. But again, I was fascinated more than annoyed. |
